Postgraduate Doctoral Studies of Forestry and Wood Technology

Academic title by completing the studies: Doctor of science in the scientific field of the Biotechnical sciences, in the scientific field of Forestry or in the scientific field of Wood Technology.

The Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology at the University of Zagreb established in the academic year 2014/2015 the new Postgraduate Doctoral Studies of Forestry and Wood Technology and since then it has been preparing the doctoral students for the scientific-research works in the scientific area of Biotechnological sciences, subject field of Forestry and subject field of Wood Technology.

It consists of teaching classes and scientific-research work (projects). The maximum teaching load does not exceed 20% of the total course schedule expressed in ECTS-credits.

The first semester of the studies consists of methodological courses (the first credit group), while in the second and third semester students choose an elective module and elective courses (the second credit group) in agreement with the mentor, based on the scientific activity and on the field of scientific researches.  During the course of their studies, students also have to demonstrate their scientific activity that is awarded according to defined criteria (the third credit group).


During their studies, the candidates must collect 36 ECTS credits in direct teaching classes from the first and the second credit group (compulsory courses, elective modules and elective courses) and 144 ECTS credits from the third credit group (scientific works, scientific activities and doctorate dissertation). Instead of the elective courses from the suggested programme of studies, the students can enrol also in courses from other doctoral studies.

The entire doctoral studies programme is conducted in the form of lectures, exercises, research implementation, writing of seminar papers, publishing of scientific and professional papers.


The teaching classes are held in blocks for single courses. After that, students have the possibility to take exams. In case of less than five participants, teaching classes are held through consultations, whereas the practical part is held in groups according to the number of participants.

When required, the complete programme of doctoral studies can be held in the English language.

The duration of the studies is 3 years or 6 semesters and is awarded in 180 ECTS credits.
