Dendroecological Laboratory

Dendroecological Laboratory (Dendrolab)  is a scientific-research laboratory within the Institute of Forest Ecology and Silviculture at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology of the University of Zagreb.

Activity

The activity of the members of the Laboratory is focused on the fundamental and applied research activities in the field of palaeoclimatology, ecology, hydrology and dynamics of forest ecosystems.  The work of the Dendroecological Laboratory research team is focused on researches and a better understanding of the interaction of climate and tree growth in the areas of the Dinarides, of the Mediterranean and of South East Europe. The research group is focused on long-term reconstructions of climate conditions and extreme climate events, as well as analysis and reconstructions of natural disturbances of forest ecosystems (fires, floods, droughts, insect progradation). Dendroecological laboratories currently have over 5000 newly collected samples from South East Europe.

Other areas of interest include:

  • Construction and development of long-term time series of tree growth in South East Europe.
  • Analysis of the climate change impacts on the forest ecosystems and different tree species.
  • Analysis of climate change adaptation measures in vulnerable sectors
  • Stable isotope analysis
  • Conducting fundamental researches and publishing results in high impact journals
  • Education of motivated undergraduate and graduate students

Main Equipment

The laboratory is equipped with:

  • System for collection of field-data about the forest stands structure (FieldMAP)
  • Winscanopy hemispherical photo capture system (fisheye)
  • On-site sampling equipment (Pressler drills of various lengths from 30 to 100 cm)
  • Mechanical rough and fine sample processing equipment (belt sanders etc).
  • ATRICS system with binocular and polarized source of light as well as an automated table (100 cm) for sample recording.
  • 24 Processor workstation for sophisticated graphics processing of imagery and Ecological Modelling (64GB RAM)
  • Multiple workstations and related software support
  • GPS devices, callipers, altimeters and other small field equipment
