Tree sanitation and conservation

Opterećenje: 15+15+0
Sadržaj predmeta: The course Rehabilitation and conservation of trees deals with procedures for preventing the occurrence of damage as well as care measures and procedures for the rehabilitation of damaged tree parts with the aim of maintaining their longevity and optimal health. The conservation and preservation of old trees, in addition to increasing the material value of the property, affects the aesthetic and functional benefits that a certain tree provides. Lectures: 1. Introduction to rehabilitation and conservation of trees. Historical development of tree rehabilitation and conservation (presentation of previously used techniques and procedures). The importance of tree rehabilitation. Tree conservation to preserve natural heritage and increase biodiversity. 2. Restoration of root damage: Preparatory work. Root protection procedures during construction works. Pruning the damaged root. Other procedures for improving the condition of the root system (removal and replacement of soil, soil amendments, installation of supports for leaning damaged trees, etc.). Monitoring after root rehabilitation. 3. Restoration of damage to the trunk: Determining the extent of the damage. Bark damage repair procedures. Repair of cavities. Monitoring after the rehabilitation. 4. Crown repair: Pruning the crown after a storm. Assessment of the intensity of pruning of the damaged canopy. Assessment of the impact of crown damage on the stability and vitality of the tree. Stabilization of the secondary canopy. Monitoring after the restoration of canopy damage. 5. Canopy Securing: Overview of Canopy Securing Systems. Comparison of static and dynamic canopy security systems. Control, maintenance and replacement of installed canopy security systems. A proposal for an alternative to crown insurance. 6. Conservation of trees: Old and veteran trees. Conservation procedures of important and protected trees. 7. Special procedures for rehabilitation and conservation of trees: removal of mistletoe, removal of old systems for securing the crown, felling of trees to form high stumps (torso), removal of stumps, systems for protecting trees in case of lightning strikes. Exercises: 1. Assessment of the stability of the tree (safety against root exfoliation and trunk breakage) using the tensile test method 2. Assessment of the extent of damage to the trunk using arboricultural instruments. 3. Assessment of the intensity of tree pruning. 4. Practical installation of dynamic systems for securing the crown. 5. Preparation of tree rehabilitation and conservation studies. Components of the study. Recording of performed analyses. Recommendations for tree restoration measures and operations. Opinion and conclusion of the study.
