Postgraduate Doctoral Studies

The Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology of the University of Zagreb has a long tradition in postgraduate education, at first offering only courses in doctorate studies, and later on establishing also programme courses in  masters of science and specialist studies.

The first doctorate in the field of Forestry was obtained at the Economy and ForestryFaculty on June 4th, 1923. Till that time, the doctorates in Forestry were obtained at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Zagreb, which the Forestry Academy had been connected to from 1898 to 1919, or at some other foreign university.  Since 1960 the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology has been independent and postgraduate studies in Forestry and Wood Technologies have been established for obtaining the titles of the Doctor of Science, Master of Science and Master Specialist.

The Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology at the University of Zagreb established in the academic year 2014/2015 the new Postgraduate Doctoral Studies of Forestry and Wood Technology and since then it has been preparing the doctoral students for the scientific-research activities in the scientific area of Biotechnological sciences, subject field of Forestry and subject field of Wood Technology.

It consists of teaching classes and scientific-research work. The maximum teaching load does not exceed 20% of the total course schedule expressed in ECTS-credits.

The first semester of the studies is structured in the way that enables all the students to follow the compulsory methodological courses (the first credit group), while in the second and third semester students choose an optional module and optional courses (the second credit group) in agreement with the mentor, based on the scientific activity and on the field of scientific research.

During the course of their studies, students also have to demonstrate their scientific activity that is awarded according to the defined criteria (the third credit group). During their studies, the candidates have to collect 36 ECTS credits in direct teaching classes from the first and the second credit group (compulsory courses, elective modules and elective courses) and 144 ECTS credits from the third credit group (scientific works, scientific activities and doctorate dissertation). Instead of the elective courses from the suggested programme of studies, the students can enrol also in courses from other doctoral studies.

The entire doctoral studies programme is conducted in the form of lectures, exercises, research implementation, writing of seminar papers, publishing of scientific and professional papers.

The teaching classes are held in blocks for single courses. After that, students have the possibility of taking exams. In case of less than five participants, teaching classes are held through consultations, whereas the practical part is held in groups according to the number of participants.

When required, the complete programme of doctoral studies can be held in the English language. The duration of the studies is 3 years or 6 semesters and is awarded in 180 ECTS credits.

Academic title by completing the studies: Doctor of science in the scientific field of the Biotechnical sciences, in the scientific field of Forestry or in the scientific field of Wood Technology.
